Using a Strengths-Based Approach to Hiring [+ PDF Download]

#employeeengagement #employeejourney interviewquestions strengthsbasedapproach

There's only so many piles of resumes you can sift through before wondering if you have enough information about a candidate's true potential.

If you've been with me long enough, you know that I'm a fierce advocate for using the CliftonStrengths® Assessment and the strengths-based approach in the work I do.

Aaaand there are so many reasons why I try to embed the strengths-based approach in every single phase of the employee life cycle- starting with the interviewing phase.

Let's talk more about this tool!

Why use a Strengths-Based Approach?

What I love about the CliftonStrengths® Assessment is that it measures the presence of talent - naturally recurring patterns of thought, feeling, or behavior that can be productively applied. So, instead of just focusing on a candidate's qualifications and experience, we can use a tool such the CliftonStrengths® Assessment to dive deep into their strengths and find out what makes them unique.

And according to the research, here are just a few things you can can expect when you adopt a strengths-based approach:

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป Employees understanding how to leverage their strengths daily

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป Higher employee engagement

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป Increased employee satisfaction in their roles

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป Decreased turnover and absenteeism

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป Increased performance and productivity

Utilizing Strengths-Based Interviews

It's easy to fall back on the stereotypical and often overplayed interview questions.

But I'm not convinced that that gives you the strongest data about a potential candidate.

When you begin to use interview questions built around a strengths-based approach, you truly begin to mine for talent. It gives you a better well-rounded picture of who your candidate is.

And it helps you understand if that candidate can truly thrive in the role.

It's amazing what you can learn when you ask open-ended questions that can allow the candidate to showcase their strengths.

It also gives you an opportunity to explore how their strengths align with the specific responsibilities and challenges that may come with the role.
